This guide explains how to check an existing connection before using ChatGPT on an iPhone in China, how to route a request through Shadowrocket, and how to narrow down loading or sign-in problems. It assumes you already have your own connection details and are eligible to use the service under its current official policies. Network access, service availability, and account eligibility can vary by location and change over time; a proxy configuration cannot guarantee access or override those policies.

Check service availability before changing settings

Separate three questions before troubleshooting: can the iPhone reach the network destination, is the ChatGPT service currently available to you from your location, and is your account eligible to sign in? Shadowrocket can apply routing rules to network traffic, but it cannot change a service’s availability decisions, account requirements, or regional policies. Check the service’s current official information and any notices shown during sign-in before assuming that a connection setting is the cause.

Also distinguish the ChatGPT app from the ChatGPT website. An app request and a browser request may use different supporting domains, system services, or authentication flows. A page that loads in Safari does not prove that every request made by the app follows the same route. Conversely, an app sign-in problem alone does not prove that the whole network connection is down.

Use only a configuration and subscription you already control. This article does not provide or recommend nodes, subscriptions, providers, or invitation codes. Shadowrocket is a paid client; buying the client does not include network access. Client purchase ≠ network subscription. Obtain Shadowrocket through the App Store, and check the current store listing for compatibility and system requirements. You can also check the download guide.

Understand what Shadowrocket controls

Shadowrocket creates a system VPN connection and applies the selected routing behavior to network requests. It does not itself supply an internet connection, create a ChatGPT account, or make an unavailable service available. You need working network access and valid connection details of your own before app routing can be tested.

In Home, check the selected item and the Global Routing mode. With Config, requests are handled according to the active configuration’s rules and policies. With Proxy, traffic is directed through the selected proxy behavior, while Direct sends traffic directly. Names and available options can vary with the configuration and app version, so check what the current interface actually shows rather than assuming a particular rule or policy exists.

A connected VPN indicator only confirms that the system has established a VPN connection. It does not prove that a given ChatGPT request used the intended outbound route, that name resolution succeeded, or that the service accepted the request. If Config is selected, a domain may match a rule that sends it DIRECT or to a policy different from the one you expected. One domain loading successfully is not a reason to switch all traffic permanently to Proxy.

Prepare a controlled test

Before editing anything, write down the current state so you can restore it. Note whether the iPhone is on Wi-Fi or cellular, which item is selected in Home, the Global Routing mode, and whether the ChatGPT app or browser is being tested. If a configuration includes multiple policies, record which one the relevant rule is expected to use. Do not share screenshots or logs containing account details, subscription addresses, tokens, or other private information.

  1. Open a webpage that normally works on the current network while Shadowrocket is disconnected. This confirms that the network itself is not entirely offline.
  2. Open Shadowrocket and check Home. Select the intended item from your existing configuration, then connect and allow the iOS VPN permission prompt if it appears.
  3. Check Global Routing. If you use Config, make a note of the active configuration and do not assume that every request is routed through a proxy.
  4. Test one ChatGPT destination using either the app or the browser, not both at once. Record whether it fails before loading, during sign-in, or after the interface appears.
  5. Repeat the same test once on the same network. If practical, repeat it on the other available network type, changing only Wi-Fi versus cellular.

Using the same destination and network for repeat tests matters. A result from Wi-Fi cannot be compared fairly with a cellular test if both the network and routing mode changed. Likewise, an app sign-in attempt and a browser page load are different tests. The goal is not to collect a large number of latency readings; it is to identify the stage at which the failure occurs.

Keep a working baseline

If the connection already works for other destinations, preserve that setup while testing ChatGPT. Change one relevant rule or routing choice, test once, and revert it if the result becomes worse.

Connect and test ChatGPT on iPhone

Use the following sequence with your own existing configuration. Interface labels can vary slightly by app version, but the distinction between selecting a connection item, connecting the VPN, and choosing routing behavior remains important. If a step does not match what appears on screen, pause and verify the current app interface rather than guessing at a hidden option.

  1. Check the network

Confirm that Wi-Fi has completed any required sign-in or that cellular data is enabled. Open a destination you normally use before connecting, so you know whether the iPhone had internet access at the start of the test.

  2. Select your item

In Shadowrocket Home, choose the intended item from your own configuration. Check that you are not selecting an expired or unintended entry simply because its name resembles the one you normally use.

  3. Choose routing

Review Global Routing. If you use Config, check the active configuration and relevant rules. Use a routing mode only when you understand its scope; do not leave a broad mode enabled just to make a single test pass.

  4. Connect the VPN

Turn on the connection in Home and accept the iOS VPN permission request if prompted. Wait for the connection state to settle before starting a request, and note whether the system status indicates an active VPN.

  5. Test one client

Open either the ChatGPT app or the official website in a browser. Try one straightforward action, such as loading the sign-in screen. Record the exact stage and any displayed error, then disconnect and repeat only if needed to compare the baseline.

If the browser works but the app does not, the issue may involve the app’s request path, cached session, or a separate account verification step. If neither works but other destinations do, inspect the relevant routing and name-resolution behavior. If no destinations work, return to basic network and connection checks before changing ChatGPT-specific rules.

Do not copy a domain list from an old post and assume it is complete. Service domains and supporting endpoints can change, and sign-in may involve more than one hostname. In Config, inspect the rules that actually match the request and the policy they select. If the configuration is managed by your own provider, consult its documentation for interpreting or safely updating that configuration; do not manually replace unknown rules with guessed values.

Troubleshoot loading, sign-in, and partial failures

Classify the symptom before adjusting settings. A blank page, an endless loading indicator, a sign-in rejection, and a feature that fails after login are not interchangeable errors. Note whether the problem affects only ChatGPT or several unrelated destinations, and whether it happens on both Wi-Fi and cellular. Then use the narrowest relevant check below.

DNS errors can resemble a routing failure: the request may not reach the stage where a usable connection is made if the hostname cannot be resolved as expected. Compare behavior on a second network and check the DNS options available in your current configuration. Change DNS only when you understand which resolver is being used and how that setting affects other traffic. Do not enter random public resolver addresses as a substitute for identifying the failure.

When a result changes after one setting is adjusted, repeat the same test before making another edit. If the change does not help, restore the previous value. This prevents several simultaneous changes from obscuring the cause and makes it easier to explain the issue to the person or service responsible for your own configuration.

Why does the VPN show connected if ChatGPT will not load?

The VPN indicator confirms a system tunnel, not successful routing or account access. In Home, verify the selected item and Global Routing, then test one destination and check the matching rule if Config is active.

Safari opens the page, but the ChatGPT app does not. What should I check?

Test one client at a time, confirm both are using the same network and Shadowrocket state, and note whether the app fails before or after sign-in. Do not assume a browser result proves every app request uses the same route.

Should I switch Global Routing to Proxy permanently?

No. Use a temporary routing change only as a controlled diagnostic if appropriate for your setup, then restore the intended mode. A broad route can affect unrelated traffic and does not change service or account eligibility.

Protect account details and keep the setup reversible

Connection troubleshooting can expose sensitive information if logs or screenshots are shared carelessly. Subscription URLs may contain credentials, and configuration files can include keys or account-specific values. Keep those details private. When asking for help, describe the symptom, network type, selected Global Routing mode, and the stage of failure, but remove addresses, tokens, email addresses, and other identifying data.

Keep changes small and reversible. Save or otherwise preserve the original configuration before editing rules. Do not delete a working item just because one ChatGPT request fails, and do not change protocol parameters unless you have the correct values from your own source. If an update or service status change appears to be responsible, check the relevant official information rather than repeatedly reinstalling or rebuilding the configuration.

Finally, treat results as a snapshot, not a guarantee. ChatGPT availability, sign-in requirements, supported locations, and network behavior can change. Recheck current official service policies and the App Store listing when needed, and use Shadowrocket only with connection details you already have permission to use. If the service indicates that your location or account is not eligible, respect that notice; routing settings do not replace the service’s rules.
